United Dictators of Mars - Questions for God

..::.::| LYRICS |.::...:.

Five o'clock the wind it howls. Quiet fills a darkened mine.
Half past five the break of dawn. I can barely make' a flame inside its shell.
Six o'clock amidst a haze. a silhouette that takes my breath away.

Cries echo on like ancient remedy for restless souls that wander free. Time beckons me. Scenes flash before my eyes. Deep inner thoughts you live you breath.

Our destiny, deep canyon walls of yesterday. This open road will bring us home. Caught in a trance. Her beauty compliments earth light this natural wonder of the world.

Although my stay is short if I'm a man of reason it's rivers will flow in my mind forever. Leading us far from here this long and winding road. Until tomorrows journey brings hope.

Far and wide Grand Canyon we look behind and wonder.

::.::| LINER NOTES |.::...:.

Tom Mody song liner notesAgain Jeff had no idea I was going to resurrect some old material. Grand Canyon goes back to our days living in Los Angeles in 1988 and was written in our rehearsal studio there and played out with Harbinger and Archivon in the early 90's and is on the Archivon "Live das Boot" CD & DVD. It's a very strange choice to try and convert to acoustic but with this song and All Walks of Life I wanted to make sure we gave some recorded history to two great songs that never got tracked in a studio. Because the arrangement is so scattered and without any real pattern it did pose a challenge to see if I could make it flow without drums but I really like the results. The intro in particular is based off from Jeff's original keyboard segue... or outro depending on what year we were playing the song. I think I structured an interesting overlaying chord arrangement for this intro that was originally a keyboard piece and built up to the meatier part of the song. The verse arrangement is more acostically picked with a flow that didn't exist in the muted choppier original heavy version. The guitar solo is among my favorites on this album. The end segment was probably my biggest concern because it's originally just simple E chords over a variation of drum fills and accents and the drums are what holds the attention. I used some synth swells to give the end some variation but what I like about it is Jeff's distant vocal effect... say from deepm inside a canyon? I should mention the song was written after a trip to the Grand Canyon with Jeff, our drummer Andy and myself writing verses of our interpretations of our visit.

Jeffrey Harris song liner notes

This is a song that I hold fond memories of hangin’ with my buds Tom & Andy in the rehearsal studio in LA writing a tune about an incredible experience of watching the sun rise over the Grand Canyon which left us awe struck. I’m quite pleased with the vocal re-phrasing in this version. Tom did a great job with translation and adaptation of the song acoustically which made it inspirational to reinvent the vocal melodies. Time and again, the reader will notice that I use the word “inspiration” in some form or other throughout the liner notes for AD. As Tom will attest, inspiration was a key element to how I would approach a song (which is usually the case in any application) especially since most nights we begin recording around 8 p.m. after a long day at work and our window of opportunity diminishes in a relatively short period of time. I’m also quite pleased with the studio tricks Tom utilized on the vox. The “distant” effect is key to the verses in my opinion and gives it the feel that enhances the “telling” of the story as if a person is actually telling this story form way down in the bottom of the canyon…
