Tom Mody song liner notesThe above video is a 10 minute short of what is a 45 minute documentary on the writing and recording of When I Die included with the 2nd disc on our album "Questions for God". Jeff had made it known we did a disservice to ourselves that no video was shot from our previous album "Smash Hits" and considering our musical history is well documented on video he was right. It's hard to video document stuff now because it's just the 2 of us. He's not around when I'm recording and I'm too busy telling him what to do when he's singing so thinking about filming is a major distraction since time is limited. But I made the commitment to follow one song from idea to tape- and what a song! I waited a few months until we got around to doing this video process because I thought it was important to have a song where Jeff had a writing contribution but I had yet to create music. The only things missing from the total process are Jeff at home writing the lyrics and an initial discussion we had in that he wanted a "big" chorus in the song and our discussions of the a capella intro prior to music writing. From there the tapes are rolling. It was hard to edit my writing and recording parts because I was alone and it can get boring watching multiple recording takes. Once Jeff came to do his vocals we could banter and react so there's more life to the process. I especially enjoy the segment where I'm playing the music for him the first time. And of course, my daughter assessment of the song as a whole... really, really, really, really, really, really...

Jeffrey Harris song liner notes

This was a fun process. I actually had the lyrics (for the most part) written with an idea for this CD and brought it to Tom. It's too bad we didn't film the actual night that I sang the chorus idea for Tom and the actual process where we recorded it for him to write around the idea. Perhaps he still has that actual recording somewhere. I know it actually differs from what we ended up with but it was close and was the beginning of a long creative journey. We had a lot of fun in the process. Billy Pierce AKA "Billy Rock-N-Roll' came over a few of the evenings in which we recorded and filmed and he is actually on the other end of the camera in some shots inside the "vocal booth". That was a lot of fun. The a capella part in the beginning was not as easy as one might think. It took countless takes and revamping to end up with something we both (Tom & I) were happy with. I think Tom was content with the first version but I heard bits and pieces in it which I did not like. But he obliged when I wanted to revamp and pulled the camera out a couple more times to capture what is the final result. There were some bits which did not make it to the final cut but probably with good reason if you catch my drift... Anyhow, enjoy!
